Today we did the second science investigation for air. Students were given a tub of water, a small vial, a paper towel and a foam ball. They were sent off to explore the question: What can you learn about air using vials and water? They tested ideas and observed what happened.
Here are some of the discoveries I heard our scientists make:
* When the vial tips sideways, air escapes from the vial and bubbles come out.
* Air gets trapped in the vial when it is under water.
* The air in the vial pushes the water down and keeps the paper towel dry.
* If there is water in the vial the foam ball will float. If there is air in the vial the ball sinks to the bottom.
I'm kicking myself for not taking pictures!
Here's an idea.... give your child a clear cup to do more research in the bath tub. It's best if it has straight sides. What else can they learn about air?
